The Avengers Review

Image

This movie has had a ton of hype by fans and for good reason. Since 2009 this movie has been built up as the first ever Marvel event movies where all of Marvel’s heroes appear on screen at the same time. I personally never really bought into the hype though. I never really loved any of the Avenger prequels besides Iron Man and I thought that the trailer looked cheesy. But alas, I sat down to watch the movie tonight and I ended up being blown away. What I saw was the best Marvel movie to date, and very possibly the best comic book movie too. This movie succeeds on all levels, and exceeds all expectations on my part. From this point on there will be minor spoilers, so if you don’t want to know what happened turn away.

The basic story is that Loki has came to Earth and he’s going to use an alien race to take over. In the very first scene of the movie he breaks into a S.H.I.E.L.D base and steals one of their weapons that will help him open up the portal to space and  allow his alien army to come to Earth. During this scene it firmly establishes Loki as a badass villain. He actually kills people in this movie and comes off as legitimately menacing. He also puts some sort of spell over Hawkeye that essentially makes Hawkeye an extremely deadly assassin slave for Loki. This was honestly a very good thing, because without it Hawkeye would have been just another guy in the background for this movie. From here Nick Fury realizes that Earth is in danger, and he starts bringing together the Avengers.

The first Avenger we’re reintroduced to is Black Widow. I personally never cared for her in Iron Man 2 but in this movie she was a complete badass and had some really great character moments. She came across as very smart and a legitimate spy as she uses mind games on multiple people to get what she wants. After her showing in this movie I honestly wouldn’t be opposed to a Black Widow solo movie in the future. After we’re introduced to her, she’s given the task of finding Bruce Banner also known as the Hulk. I honestly thought that Mark Ruffalo was going to suck as Bruce Banner. All of his lines came across as very cheesy and he just looked out of place in the trailers. But boy am I eating crow now.

Mark Ruffalo and Hulk is the best thing in this movie. I’m just going to go ahead and say that Ruffalo plays the best Hulk we’ve ever seen. Bruce is really PERFECT in this movie. He’s a really smart guy who is working as a doctor in some 3rd world country when Black Widow tries to recruit him for the Avengers. He comes off as a smart yet tortured man who has a demon inside of him that he can’t control. They strike the perfect mixture between scientist and jekyll/hyde character and it REALLY works for this movie. After seeing this film I really think that everyone will be wanting a new solo Hulk movie starring Ruffalo, because he really steals the show in this.

The next guy we meet is Captain America who is the leader of the team and a fish out of water. They really give Cap a ton of great character moments in this and he comes across just as I’d imagine him in the comic books. His character is still very old fashioned and has strong morals just like you’d expect someone from WWII era to have. Don’t get me wrong though, Captain America kicks ass in this. He doesn’t have all of the flashy powers as some of the others but his character, courage and fighting skill really shine through in this. I was really worried that he’d come off as second fiddle to Iron Man in this, but that really wasn’t a problem because Captain took the role of natural battle field leader and shared the spotlight with Iron Man evenly even though they often clash. We also really get to see Cap use his shield as a weapon in this, which is something that he never really did in his solo movie.

Image

Next we met Iron Man again. As always he’s amazing and Robert Downy Jr. brings the character to life like no other person could. As always he’s a cocky asshole billionaire that is for some reason completely lovable. We really get to see his genius side in this too though and I was very impressed by that. He wasn’t just a cocky asshole in a metal suit, he was a genius who had reason for being cocky. His continuing clashing with Captain America was great to watch as they really are great natural rivals since their personalities automatically clash. I even loved his teasing of Bruce Banner in an attempt to get him to change into the Hulk. Overall with Iron Man I really hope RDJ comes back for more sequels because no one else can play this character like he does.

Lastly we’re introduced to Thor. A lot of people are saying that he got the shaft in this movie, but I really don’t think that’s true. He doesn’t show up till around 30 minutes into the movie, but when he does it’s awesome. All he really does in this movie is kick ass and be a connection to Loki but he’s amazing at both of those things. His fights with Iron Man and Hulk are both absolutely amazing and one could argue that he comes out on top in both of those bouts. He really comes across as the teams brute strength warrior in this, and i’m fine with that because not everyone needs to be a scientist. He also delivers the best line in the entire movie with “he’s adopted”

Image

If you couldn’t tell, the characters are amazing in this movie and that’s really what makes it so amazing. Yes the action and humor are superb but if the characters weren’t so fleshed out and ripped straight from the comic books then it wouldn’t succeed nearly as much as it does. In the final battle scene we get to see all of the members kicking ass from Captain America commanding police officers and fighting aliens on the ground, to Hawkeye on a building sniping aliens, to the Hulk just going fucking crazy and destroying everything. In the end the US government calls in a nuclear strike to take out all of New York City and the alien invasion, but Iron Man carries the missile up into space where it blows up the alien ship and destroys the aliens meanwhile Hulk finds Loki and Loki tells him to “kneel at my feet” and then Hulk proceeds to beat the shit out of Loki in about 5 seconds. Iron Man falls out of space though, seemingly dead from asphyxiation or something. Hulk then jumps out of nowhere and catches him. The Avengers all surround him and he’s seemingly dead, then the Hulk lets out a massive roar and Tony suddenly snaps out of unconsciousness and has some snappy one liners. From here the Avengers part way and Thor brings Loki to Asgard for his punishment.

If I did have one gripe it would be the ending with Iron Man doing the self sacrifice  thing. I mean, EVERYONE knew that he wasn’t really going to die. That’s a minor quim though in a movie that is purely amazing. I honestly couldn’t ask for more in a super hero movie and I can’t wait for the sequel. They found a perfect blend of drama, comedy, and action that I honestly didn’t think was possible. Don’t hesitate to buy your ticket for this movie, because you’ll leave the theater more than satisfied.

Stay tuned for more reviews. I’m finished with college for the Summer so I’ll be reviewing a lot of what I’ve seen, watched, and heard over my hiatus on here. I also want to start doing some gaming stuff, so look out for that as well.

The Amazing Spider-Man thoughts

Image

I’ve been a life time fan of Spider-Man. I’ve seen every single movie, tv show, and I’ve read all of the famous comic book arcs. Hell, I even seen the original Spider-Man movie on opening weekend when I was in the 4th grade. At the time I was a dumb little kid and I loved what I seen, but over time I personally think that the Sam Raimi movies don’t really hold up. Yes, they’re entertaining but they don’t feel as special and epic as a Spider-Man movie should be. But now we have a reboot of the franchise and the trailer of the movie was released early this morning, and it was fucking amazing.

Image

I had my reservations about The Amazing Spider-Man but the trailer for this has erased all doubts. It looks like the epic Spidey story that I’ve been wanting for so long, that in my opinion Sam Raimi never really truly pulled off. The trailer showed a darker and more comic book accurate movie version of Spider-Man. New York City looks amazing and dark and Spider-Man is funny, a smartass, yet still complex with a great deal of moral complexity. THIS is the Spider-Man that I grew up with in my mind, and I can’t fucking wait to see it in the theater this July. I know a lot of people are going to hate on the darker and more serious tone, but in my opinion Spider-man has always been a dark story. Thank you so much Mark Miller for making me feel like a 10 year old  over Spider-Man again.

Who can beat Jon Jones?

Us MMA fans have christened people the next great MMA star quite a few times in our sports short history. Lyoto Machida, Brock Lesnar, Shogun Rua, and others have all been deemed unbeatable at some point over the last few years and ended up losing their titles pretty quickly. The latest unbeatable fighter is Jonny “Bones” Jones. Jon is basically undefeated in MMA with his only loss coming from a bs disqualification against Matt Hamill in 2009. Since then Jon has been on a tear by destroying Lyoto Machida, Rampage Jackson, Shogun Rua, Ryan Bader, Vladimir Matyshenko, and Brendan Vera. With those wins Jon legitimatly seems unstoppable. He’s taken out 3 sure fire hall of fame fighters in his last 3 fighters with relative ease and has never really even been tested as a fighter. So who do you think has a shot at beating him?

Dan Henderson – Dan has been on a roll. In his last 2 fights he’s beaten legendarily great fighters in Fedor Emelianenko and Shogun Rua. He really has nothing that could give him a strategic advantage over Jon Jones though. One of Dan’s greatest strengths is his wrestling, and Jon is also known as a great wrestler so that’s irrelevant. The one thing Dan has that no one else is his H-Bomb. The extremely powerful overhand right that he throws that could end any single fight in an instant. I doubt very seriously that Jon would give him the chance to land it though.

Anderson Silva – This match up is unlikely unless Anderson moves to LHW full time but I think he’d give him more problems than anyone. Like Jon, Anderson also has a very long reach that gives him an advantage over opponents. Like Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva is a counter striker. Machida gave Jon more problems than anyone to date has, so I think Anderson’s combo of reach and counter striking could present a lot of problems for Jon. If Jonny tried taking Silva down he’s also very good off his back so there’s a big threat of submission. I doubt that the fight will ever happen but if it did I think there’s a very good chance that Anderson Silva would win.

Rashad Evans – I really don’t see what the big deal about Rashad is but I’m including him in here because a lot of people think that Rashad can beat Jones. I personally don’t see any way that he can though. Sugar’s claim to fame is his unorthodox striking and even that isn’t that good. He’s knocked out a broken down Ortiz/Liddell and he knocked out an overrated Forrest Griffin. Ever since he’s been wrestlefucking people and I doubt very seriously that he can outstrike or out wrestle Jon Jones.

Phil Davis – A lot of people are high on but I see nothing that could get him a win over Jones. His only advantage is his sheer massive frame that could possible take down Jones and hold him into a decision. But Jones has proven to find a way to win so chances are he’d still pull off the W.
so what do you think? Does anyone have a chance of beating Jones? I personally think we’re going to be in for a long Anderson Silva like run where he’s nearly unstoppable.

The Gate Review

I picked this up the other day ago and I had some pretty big expectations.  The story is that some kids open the gate to hell and unleash some demons into their neighborhood. It seemed like a decent idea that could be entertaining. I thought it was going to be like The Goonies mixed with The Exorcist or something like that. Well, needless to say it wasn’t exactly the classic that I was expecting. It did end up being an okay movie but it was really nothing special or memorable. I was planning on writing a big ole review for this, but it was so bleh that I really can’t muster up enough material to write something long. It was pretty much simply decent across the board. The only gripe I have about it is that the demon monsters weren’t really creepy after you see that they’re about 1 foot tall and could do no real damage to you. But besides that the movie is good and Isuspect that it has a group of people who are die hard loyal fans of it, but in my case it was just mediocre.

Pet Semetary Review

I just discovered Stephen King’s Pet Semetary a few months ago. It had achieved legendary status in my eyes because nearly every person in my family seems to think that the movie is “evil” Is it really evil? No. But it is a very good horror story. I know a lot of people knock on this movie because of a supposed disturbing image of a kid getting hit by a truck, but that shot isn’t even in the movie, or at least it isn’t in my cut. There is some very disturbing images and the movie does deal with a child dying and then coming back to life and proceeding to murder his mother and neighbor. But I still really like the movie.

The story is pretty much what I said above. A family from Chicago moves to a small country logging town where Louis (the husband) is going to be a doctor at a local college. The problem is that they live beside of a logging road that tractor trailers constantly barrel down all day long. After their pet cat is killed by one of the trucks, Louis seeks help from their neighbor Jud who tells him about a Native American burial ground where the dead comes back to life after buried. After burying the cat it does come back, but the problem is that it came back with an attitude problem. Along the way we also get a lot of plot, character development, and backstory which just adds up to the final 30 minutes when we finally get the payoff. Through the entire movie everybody was waiting for this:

Because we all knew it was going to happen eventually. But they ingeniously made us wait well into the movie before the little boy dies. We get a lot of creepy images building up to the big moment to keep us satisfied, and it was smart to let us grow attached to the characters before we see their son killed, so when Gage finally is killed, it hits us hard and we genuinely feel sorry for his parents. Hell, I can’t really even blame the guy for trying to make his kid come back to life, even if he did know that he would likely come back evil.  When Gage does come back it’s creepy as fuck. He’s like a scarier version of Chucky from the Child’s Play series. But maybe that’s just me because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a zombie kid that didn’t creep me out.

Overall this is a classic horror tale. It’s not for the faint of heart and it doesn’t really have a happy ending as we see a once smart and normal man have a complete mental collapse and pretty much end up going insane. The movie has great acting, great directing, great atmosphere, and will genuinely disturb you.

The Evil Dead (1981) Review

Today was the 3rd time I had seen The Evil Dead. In prior viewings I honestly didn’t enjoy the movie. I thought it was boring and overly gross. Needless to say I wasn’t really looking forward to this “classic” But surprisingly, I ended up really liking it this go round.

It’s safe to say that everyone knows the story of The Evil Dead by now. But if you don’t, I shall explain. A group of friends from Michigan State University are going on a trip to Tennessee. After they arrive they accidently unleash a horde of demons that one by one posses them all. The main protagonist of the story is the legendary Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) Ash is the only person of the 5 who doesn’t get possessed by the demons. As they posses his friends the demons taunt him and play games as he obviously struggles mentally with having to kill his own sister and his girlfriend.  In the end though,  the sun comes up and Ash is seemingly saved from the demons. So yeah, the story really isn’t anything special. It’s cool but it’s nothing that we’ve never seen before.

This movie’s bread and butter is with it’s gore effects and scares. This is what I would consider a genuinely scary movie. It has great atmosphere and you actually feel like you’re in the middle of a cold Tennessee forest that is haunted with demons. When the demons finally show up on screen I personally thought they looked very good too. Yes, the effects are a little bit dated but the make up on the demon girls looked real and scary. On top of all of that they added tons of gore, blood, snot, bile, pretty much every kind of body fluid that you can think of into it. That’s no big deal now, but for the time I’d say it was pretty extreme and I thought it was well done. And I can’t do this review without mentioning Ash. Yes, he’s as good as advertised. You feel his pain as he has to kill his demon possesses girl friend and you cheer on his badass tactics while he’s battling the other demons. Ash is the ultimate every day man, but he’s charismatic, likable, is pretty skilled at killing demons. That makes him one of the most legendary horror protagonists of all time.

Overall I actually enjoyed The Evil Dead this time around. It was scary, gory, and throughlly entertaining. It’s not for the faint of heart though because it does have some scenes that are hard to watch, but if you can get over that chances are you’ll end up really enjoying the movie.

Satan’s Little Helper Review

This movie is what I would call an undiscovered classic. I first discovered it on a boring Sunday evening via Netflix instant view. By the look of the Cover I honestly figured that it would be some corny, cliché, awful slasher movie that would be instantly forgettable and likely unwatchable. But boy was I wrong. After the credits rolled on this movie I made it my mission to recommend it to every single one of my friends who wanted a good horror movie to watch. In my opinion this should be a Halloween classic that is watched at least once a year during Halloween season. Yes, it is a B movie but it has amazingly high production value and acting for being a B-movie.

The story is pretty good and original as well. A little boy named Dougie who seems to be mildy retarded or something becomes obsessed with a game called “Satan’s Little Helper” it’s a Grand Theft Auto type of game where you run around and help the devil kill people. This is only mildy strange until on Halloween Dougie meets a guy who is dressed like Satan and is actually a serial killer. Dougie asks Satan if he can tag along and help him, and for some strange reason Satan lets him. Satan never utters a word during the entire movie, and that isn’t even a bad thing. Whoever the actor was that played him was so amazing at using body language that Satan didn’t even have to say a word. I don’t know who the actor is or how far he’s went in Hollywood, but he’s honestly the best behind the mask actor that I have ever seen in my entire life. Without the actor making Satan such a charismatic force with such great screen presence this movie wouldn’t have worked nearly as good as it did.

Actually all of the actors are good in this. They’re funny when they’re supposed to be and they deliver terror when need be. This movie is great because it can switch from laugh out loud funny to genuinely creepy very fast. It has so many classic and memorable moments in it that it’s nearly impossible to remember them all. The best thing is that it’s laughs that they designed instead of “so bad it’s funny” laughs like in most B-movies. Overall I view this movie as a classic and I honestly believe that most people would if they gave it a watch. It’s scary, funny, well acted, and has a pretty good and original story. The only reason it hasn’t achieved cult status yet is because word of mouth hasn’t spread. But since you can watch the movie on Netflix instant or for free on youtube, there’s no reason not to check this movie out.

Scream 3

Scream 3 is the first horror movie that I ever seen.  Even then, I wasn’t scared nor very entertained by this movie. As of late I’ve become a pretty big fan of the Scream franchise, so even though Scream 3 has absolutely terrible reviews I was actually pretty excited to sit down and watch it. After the great sequel that was Scream 2 I don’t understand how it’s possible to fuck up Scream 3 as bad as they did.  This movie was supposed to be an epic conclusion to the Scream series, but in the end we were given a rushed piece of garbage that comes off like every other mediocre 90s Slasher that was spawned from the original Scream.

The story is that there’s another copy cat killer and this time they’re only killing in order to find Sydney. Yeah that sounds cool, right? Well it isn’t because Sydney Prescott is hardly even in Scream 3. Apparently Neve Campbell had prior commitments so she couldn’t commit to a full movie, so instead of delaying production they just shot around her. So instead of her being the centerpiece again, she’s hardly even in the movie even though she’s the one the movie is about. If Sydney was in this movie more it would have helped it at least a little bit, because I really don’t want to see a dumbed down Gail Weathers and an extremely annoying Dewey as the main protagonists for most of the movie. I think they’re fine as supporting characters but when they’re forced to be the center of attention they just don’t work.  Whenever Dewey and Gail are together on screen I end up becoming bored and uninterested during this movie, which is strange because in the past they were a pretty good team that was entertaining. But in this one Dewey is even more retarded than he usually is and Gail has lost her mean streak that made you love to hate her. To make matters even worse, Dewey is a complete retard yet the luckiest bastard in history. Every single Ghostface has fucked this dude up, and the Ghostface in 3 even throws a knife at his face, yet he still doesn’t die. I’m willing to suspend disbelief but it’s hard to believe that Dewey aka Barney Fife is going to be that resilient.

To make things even worse that knife throwing scene looked like something out of a parody movie. Actually, this entire movie looks like a crappy Scream parody. Everything seems so cliche and forced that you just can’t take the movie seriously. While the movie does have some good ideas, they’re surrounded by complete shit so the good ideas never come to fruition. I will say that the end is decent though. At the end of the movie we find out that the killer is Sydney’s long lost half brother. Sydney’s now official whore of a mother had him at 19 and abandoned him and even after he tried to make contact with her she disowned him. It’s also revealed that Roman (the killer) is the one who talked Billy Loomis  into killing Sydney’s Mom in the first place which ended up causing countless deaths over 3 movies. They basically made him the master mind and the main villain of the entire series. I thought this was clever writing and was Scream caliber, the rest of the movie was just so meh that you really don’t care about the climax unless you’ve watched the other 2 movies because that’s the only way it would have an impact on you.

So who is to blame for this let down of a movie? I personally think that it’s the studio for rushing production and the writer for sucking balls. If the studio wouldn’t have rushed production Neve Campbell could have had a full shoot schedule and we wouldnt’ be stuck with her only in 1/3 of the movie.  We also would have had the original writer back and not have to suffer through Ehren Kruger’s ignorant writing. Just go look at the dudes IMDB page and tell me he isn’t an idiot. The dude has written some of the worst movies of all time, and even if it was a decent movie his writing was the weak part of the movie. I have no clue how this douche keeps getting work while being such a horrible writer.

Overall, if you liked the other Scream movies you should probably give this one a shot. Even though it gets boring at times and it’s a pretty big let down compared to the other Scream movies, it’s worth a watch if you’re a fan of the series. But to me the bad script, annoying Hollywood plot, lack of likable characters besides Sydney, and overall bad acting just left a sour taste in my mouth. Oh well though, at least they made a big comeback with Scream 4 this year.

The 12 Greatest Horror Heroes of All Time

Throughout the years the horror movie genre has given us many memorable villains. We all remember Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers, but no one seems to remember the heroes of the story. That’s why I’m making this list; to recognize horror’s greatest heroes.  My criteria will be how heroic they are, amount of lives saved, how well they’d fair in a fight, and how memorable they are.

1. Eben Olemaun – I’m sure this is a shocker for most people, but Eben single handedly saved a ton of people by sacrificing himself. Throughout 30 Days of Night he proved to be smart, heroic, and the leader of the Barrow survivors. Eben fought several vampires hand to hand, killed several people that had to die, and in the end killed Marlow (the lead vampire). It may not be a popular choice but I personally think there is no greater horror hero than Eben.  If more people watch 30 Days of Night I’m sure they’d agree with me on him too.

2. Sydney Prescott – I personally think Sydney is the best horror heroine ever. She’s fought 7 different killers and came out on top every single time. She’s not only an extremely strong woman figure but she’s also very beautiful and has a good back story. She may not be the most intimidating person on this list, but she’s a surviror and she always finds a way to overcome the odds and beat the killer.

3. Ash – He’s just a badass every day guy who kills demon zombies and has a chainsaw for an arm.  He’s a very believable badass and a very likable one at that. If this list was based on pure “who would kick the most asses” Ash would definitely be at the top of it. For most people I’m sure Ash would top their heroes list and I can see why, but I’m not a huge Evil Dead fan, so for now he’s number 3.

4. Peter Vincent and Charlie Brewster –  these two are the greatest hero tag team of all time. If I had a vampire problem they would be the ones who I would want to help me. While on the outside they might not look very intimidating, they’ve actually took down several vampires with their bare hands, saved numerous lives, and showed a lot of bravery in the process. It also helps that they’re also the best comedy duo on the list.

5.  Van Helsing – He’s the most famous monster hunter in the world and is pretty much the only person who can kick Dracula’s ass. He uses his brain to create special weapsons to defeat every monster he faces, and he never loses. He’s pretty much simply a fearless badass who hunts down evil for a living. Awesome.

6. Nancy – She’s in my opinion the sexiest of all scream queens, but that’s not why she’s on this list. Most teenage girls would just run around in circles and scream like bitches if they had to battle a demon that kills you in your dreams, but Nancy faces him head on and ends up killing him. She’s one of the few horror survivors that actually deserved to survive because she actually tried to fight the razor clawed demon Freddy. It’s a shame more of the sequels didn’t focus on her because she was one of the most likable horror heroines of all time.

7. Tommy Jarvis – He’s definitely the most memorable hero from the famed Friday the 13th series and I think a lot of people would have him pretty high on their list of heroes. After all he is the only person who has ever faced and killed Jason Voorhees 3 times, and one of those times he was every bit of 10 years old when he hacked into Jason’s head with a machete. There doesn’t appear to be anything special about Tommy, but he sure as fuck does have Jason Voorhees’ number.

8. Rachel Keller – Despite her being the perfect woman with that flwoing blonde mane and spunky personality she’s also a determined and smart woman. Rachel has exactly 7 days to unravel a seemingly impossible mystery before her and her son will be killed, it leads Rachel to some very dark places but in the end Rachel survives the ordeal, even though she had to do some bad things. She’s pretty much the embodiment of every motherly figure ever.

9. Scooby Doo –  this spot came down between Scooby and The Ghost Busters. I honestly would trust neither since they’re both bumbling and doofy, but Scooby Doo is a Great Dane, who doesnt’ love Great Danes? Especially Great Danes who have a cute voice and loves sandwiches. Scooby Doo has solved so many mysteries that it’s impossible to list them all and he’s made a ton of people happy along the way. He’s by far the most heroic horror animal of all time.

10. Ben – He’s simply a badass. In the face of an end of the world zombie outbreak Ben takes charge and becomes a leader for the group of survivors in Night of the Living Dead‘s farm house. He’s the first person who figures out how to kill the zombies and he keeps a cool head even when under enormous pressure. He’d be even higher on this list if he wouldn’t have inadvertently killed several people by telling them it wouldn’t be safe in the basement, when in reality the basement was definitely the safest place to be and hiding there is how he survived.

Well folks, there ya have it. I’m sure that I missed out a few people and I’m sure that a lot of people would hate the list if they seen it, but those are just my honest favorites. So what do you think? Who did I leave out? Make sure to leave me a star rating, spread the word, and leave comments down below!

Scream 2

After the events of the original Scream a lot has happened. Sydney and Randy are now in college, Gail has written a book that now has a movie adaptation, and Dewey is now retired from the police due to nerve damage.  The opening scene is very good just like in the original movie. We find out that Gail Weather’s book has been adapted into a movie. It was pretty entertaining seeing a reshoot of the Scream 1 opening scene and hearing people in the audience critique it for being stupid. About 70% of the theatre is dressed in Ghostface attire, so when a real life copy cat killer starts killing people in the theatre no one even knows. Yes, the premise of this is that there is a copy cat killer trying to recreate the killings in the first movie. Is that a good plot? I personally think that it’s pretty decent and works very well in this movie.

Just like in the original they keep you guessing throughout the entire movie about who the actual killer is. They throw out a lot of red herrings but I personally thought that one of the two killers was blatantly obvious. Mickey is a film student who loves sequels, seems a bit insane, is shown recording things constantly, knows the college like the back of his hand, and always seems to show up when a murder happens. I liked him as one of the two killers, he was just blatantly obvious. I did really like though that his plan was to let himself get caught and then win his freedom in a trial by pleading that violent media made him commit the crimes. That scenario is crazy and it would never work, but I admired him for his spunk. Timothy Olyphant plays him very well despite it being obvious he was one of the killers. I can’t really complain about that too much though because I loved the 1st Scream and in it the killers were a bit obvious looking back too.

The other killer though came completely out of left field. When they revealed who it was I was completely shocked and it actually made sense. Throughout the movie we see Gail Weathers clashing with a local reporter, we never really think anything about it but in the end it’s revealed that she Is the mastermind of it and the killer. But it gets even better than that! What is her motive?  She’s Billy Loomis’ mother (he was Sydney’s boyfriend in the first movie and the killer) after finding out about Sydney killing Billy she thirsted for vengeance and started plotting the murders. They end up killing quite a few people before in the end being halted by our heroine Sydney. The villains are great in this though. The crazy mother is reminiscent of Pamela Voorhees and the Mickey character is pretty much a smarter version of Stu from the first movie. I’m pretty sure these two are the most formidable pair out of all the Scream series killers.

As for the rest of the cast they’re all solid too. Sydney continues to solidify herself as the best horror heroine of all time. Randy makes a triumphant return as the fan favorite, only to meet his demise about mid way through the movie. Cotton Weary returns and has a much larger part in this movie, and despite being a murder suspect he ends up saving the day in the end. The only real notable new character besides the killers is Derek (played by Jerry O’Connel) who is Sydney’s new love interest and a suspect in the killings. I thought he was portrayed very well and I actually thought he was the 2nd killer for most of the movie. His death scene was pretty sad too when the audience and Sydney find out that he was only wanting to keep her safe all along and he really loved her.  They also for some reason through in a bunch of token black characters. I don’t have a problem with that because they were all good but it was quite obvious that they only did that because of people claiming the first movie was racist because it had no black people.

Overall Scream 2 is a very entertaining sequel. While it isn’t as good as the 1st nor as good as the 4th I find it to be a very well made movie with likable characters, scary moments, and an entertaining story. Chances are if you enjoyed the first Scream, you’ll also really enjoy this one.
